Schisandra chinensis

Schisandra, known in Chinese as Wu Wei Zi or "five-flavor berry," is the only fruit said to contain all five tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is a prized herb for energy, focus and beauty, once enjoyed by royalty for radiant skin, sharp focus and lasting vitality.

How to Use

• Tea: Lightly crush 1 teaspoon of berries and steep in hot water for 10–15 minutes.
• Cold infusion: Soak berries in cool water overnight for a bright, tart drink (traditionally called omija-cha in Korea).
• Blends: Pair with goji berries, ginger, rhodiola or hibiscus.
• Homemade extract (tincture): Soak the herb in alcohol or vegetable glycerin for 4–6 weeks.

Good to Know

Avoid during pregnancy. Talk with your provider if you take medications processed by the liver, as schisandra may affect how they work.
