Ashwagandha is one of the most treasured roots in Ayurveda, India's traditional system of wellness, where it has been used for over 3,000 years. Its Sanskrit name means "smell of the horse," a nod to both its earthy aroma and its reputation for supporting strength and stamina. It is valued for helping the body handle everyday stress while promoting a sense of calm, steady energy.

How to Use

• Simmered tea: Simmer 1 teaspoon of root in 1½ cups of water for 15–20 minutes, then strain.
• Moon milk: Simmer the root in milk or plant milk with cinnamon, nutmeg and honey for a calming evening drink.
• Blends: Combine with tulsi, chamomile or lemon balm for a relaxing tea, or with cacao and cinnamon for a grounding latte.
• Homemade extract (tincture): Soak the herb in alcohol or vegetable glycerin for 4–6 weeks, then strain. Take a few drops at a time.

Good to Know

A member of the nightshade family. Traditionally taken consistently over several weeks. Avoid during pregnancy, and talk with your provider if you take thyroid, sedative or blood sugar medications.
